Clients ask me this constantly: “Should this be a Reel or a post? Should I even bother with Stories?” Fair question – and one most small business owners are never taught how to answer.
Here’s how I think about it, stripped of jargon.
Reels: for discovery and momentum
Reels are how new people find you. The algorithm is built to push this format to audiences beyond your existing followers, which makes it your best tool for growth and visibility. Use Reels when you want to reach people who don’t know you yet – tutorials, behind-the-scenes, relatable moments, quick wins.
Don’t use Reels purely to announce things. Save the announcements for formats your existing audience already checks reliably.
Static posts: for clarity and saveability
Static posts and carousels are where depth lives. They’re what people save, screenshot, and come back to. If you have something genuinely useful to teach – a list, a framework, a step-by-step – a carousel will outperform a Reel almost every time, because it rewards re-reading rather than rewatching.
Stories: for relationship and access
Stories are the most intimate, least polished space you have. This is where your existing community, the people who already follow you, get to feel like insiders. Polls, questions, behind-the-scenes, day-in-the-life. Don’t overthink production value here; overthinking it actually works against you, because Stories are supposed to feel real-time and human.
A simple decision framework
Ask yourself one question before creating anything: who is this piece of content actually for?
- New people who don’t know me yet → Reel
- People who need to learn or reference something → static post or carousel
- People who already follow me and want to feel close to the brand → Story
Stop trying to make every format do every job. Each one has a lane. Respect it, and your content strategy gets dramatically simpler.
